The goal of the Millennium Nucleus in Regenerative Biology is to understand the mechanisms involved in tissue regeneration.

We are particularly focused in studying nervous system regeneration.

Our general aim is to study the genetic, cellular and physiological mechanisms of neural regeneration, using regenerative and non-regenerative model systems.

Regenerative Biology

The goal of the Millennium Nucleus in Regenerative Biology is to understand the mechanisms involved in tissue regeneration. We are particularly focused in studying nervous system regeneration. Our general aim is to study the genetic, cellular and physiological mechanisms of neural regeneration, using regenerative and non-regenerative model systems. The researchers in MINREB are devoted to answer one common question: Why neuronal regeneration in mammalians is inefficient? For this the expertise of their researchers in different areas such as neurotrophic factors, mesenchymal and neural stem cells, neurogenesis, axonal regeneration, glia, and early vertebrate development should allow novel approaches to answer the indicated question. The complementary expertise will allow experimental approaches using regenerative (Xenopus and peripheral nervous system) and non-regenerative (mouse central nervous system) model systems. We envision that basic research in Regenerative Biology is necessary for progress in Regenerative Medicine, a field aimed to develop novel therapies for restoring tissue function in diseases of high social impact. Among others the specific aims of MINREB are: 1.- Role of glial cells in axonal regeneration in the Central and Peripheral nervous system; 2.- Role of neurogenesis, neurotrophic factors and myelin-inhibitors in spinal cord regeneration in Xenopus tadpoles; 3.- Comparison of the transcriptome involved in spinal cord regeneration in Xenopus tadpoles with a murine model for spinal cord injury; 4.- Analysis of neurotrophin function in neural regeneration using in vitro model systems.
